Performance Anxiety: Motivation

Why would any sufferer of stage fright want to put themselves through the misery of performance?

Three honorable reasons to play for/with others come to mind:

Performing makes you a better musician. An upcoming performance is a strong motivation to learn, as well as a fair measure of your abilities and an indicator of what you need to work on.

Performing is fun. It feels good to share your love of music with others.

Performing brings joy to the world. Music is a universal language that has the power to inspire, connect, and heal.

While all the benefits above can be enjoyed as an amateur in many ways, musical performance can also become a right livelihood for some of us. Money and notoriety can be legitimate rewards… as long as they are servants, not masters, of our lives.

Whatever your reasons for performing…  allow your music to be an expression of your most deeply-held values… and you can’t go wrong.
